I have the 289 out of by 65 coup for a rebuild. Does anyone know which is the correct engine black paint to use. I've seen semi gloss, gloss, stain and flat. Which is it. Also since the engine was out I was thinking of putting on tri y headers (under $200) or Hi Po exhaust manifolds ($300). I read that there could be issues with the way the headers fit. I have power streering & AC. Any feed back from someone how has swapped out their stock exhaust manifolds would be great. Or is it a wast of money.

I've had my Shelby for 43 years and have been though 6 or 7 sets of headers and every stinking one has had fitment issues. The worst was a set of repo tri-ys. There was no excuse, there is plenty of room on the passenger side but they rubbed on the bell housing. The drivers side interfered with the pitman arm and clutch linkage. Add P/S and oh my. Even the high dollar Hookers had to be clearanced at one spot on the #5 cyl.

ditto .. repro tri-y have clearance issues as described and w/ram of p/s, even with required lowering bracket. then if want to lower suspension, bracket will bottom out on occasion, w/ 225-50-15 tires. i've never had hipo manifolds, but i would think you're not losing that much hp/torque vs ease of use.

I had repo tri-y headers on my '65 w/289 and I replaced them two years ago with a set of repo hipo manifolds. I am very happy with my decision. As the two other posts have mentioned, I had fitment problems with the tri-y's and I finally got tired of the noise and the heat. I also swapped in an AOD transmission in place of my C4, and had problems fitting the headers in properly. I am happy with my decision to replace the headers with the manifolds.
I sincerely doubt you will notice any difference in performance, especially if you're using the stock heads.

Thanks for everyones input on the header vs. HiPo manifold debat. Cushman 350 thanks for the link. I was able to get the correct paint at the local parts store (now that I know what the correct paint is).
