I have a 65 coupe that was changed from a 3 speed to a Automatic. The safety wiring for starting an backup lamp has been cut.In the manual it shows it going threw the fire wall for a auto but it came from the factory a 3 speed.Where do I look for the 4 wire, split 2 an 2 plug in's.

stick shift cars did not have the neutral safety switch harness..  the wires on the dash harness were just connected together..   the neutral safety switch harness .. made a LOOP of the circuits.. down to the transmission and back up to continue...

or are you asking where to buy one???

do you have a wiring diagram for your 66...   you will see the wiring colors listed...

once you get the dash layed out.. or crawing under you will probably find where to connect the neutral safety harness ..

The wire for connection for the 66 comes out of the firewall near the middle top and is two separate plugs.

I have a 65 with a 170 which had a stick shift. Now it has a C-4 with a new neutral safety switch. How do I connect it is what I am asking?

now i am lost...

most stick shift mustangs don't have the harness... or if they do its disconnected under the dash and the wiring is connected to bypass the NS harness...

all the dash harnesses are set up to be automatic or manual..   depending if you install the NS harness..

So what you are saying is that if it came from the factory with a stick shift my new NS harness has no place to conect to, like plug an play.

I have a 65 and the wires are missing from the backup lights. Where or how is the best way to run new ones? It is an automatic.

all the harnesses as far as i know...  have a MALE and a female bullet connectors that are plugged together under the dashboard...

you have to find the proper pair...   UNPLUG them..    hook them to the neutral safety harness..

at that point the circuit is completed through the neutral safety switch..

the RED and BLUE ends  hang out into the engine compartment through the firewall.  and connect to the neutral safety switch connectors shown in the second image....

the single ends of the neutral safety harness. get hooked into the proper circuits under the dash board..

are you missing the wires from the rear lights to the transmission, or a place on the transmission to connect the wires. if its a C4 automatic it has a selector switch on the side wich is both the netural safety switch and reverse, on standard there is a switch in the side, depends on transmission where it is.

Yes from the backup light to wherever they go from there. I bought new sockets but can't find where to run the wires from the socket to where? Do the wires run from the transmission to the backup lights or do they go up under the dash?

So the wires will go from the transmission to the lights?

yes, you should get power from the "on" position of the ignition switch, throught the transmission switch to the reverse lights

according to the wiring diagram i have for the 65 mustang

black with a red stripe is the back up light wiring..

should be in the harness from the back of the car to the under dash area...

other colors at the back of the car

green and an orange stripe... left turn and stop...
yellow and a white stripe is the gas gauge.
black is the tail lights.
black and red is the back up lights.
orange and blue. is the right stop and turn switch.

under the dash end of the REAR harness you may find a black with a blue stripe.. thats the dome light circuit..  this circuit comes out behind the rear seat and leads up into the roof for the dome light in the ceiling..

All the turn signal/brake light and gas guage wires are there, no luck trying to find the blk/red wire under the dash yet. Have to look again.

since you had a stick shift transmission and a 65... i am taking that you had some kind of wiring to the side of the transmission case.. or to the shifter...

was it a column shift or a floor shift...  3 speed???  were there a PAIR of wires from it..

it could be coming through the firewall sort of between the cylinder head and the master cylinder.
there is a panel joint where the upper cowl meets the lower cowl.. its near that joint.. again between the back of the head and the master cylinder..

find the harness running up from the back of the car...

where it comes out under the dash board.. start there...    it could be hooked up as 2 wires and running down to the transmission right now.. or to the top of the steering column..  i am not familiar with the 3 speed versions of the mustang..  so i don't know without a LOT of research of where the back up light switch is...  or even if the 65s came with back up lights...  i know some cars in the early to mid 60s did not have back up lights..

this is the WRONG diagram to display the exact info you need...

but its a good diagram..  you will need to open the image in a new window..
