Hello,
As I work on getting our 1970 convertible up and running again, I'm looking at the carburetor. The engine is a 302 and originally had a 2bbl and a C4 automatic. We switched to a 4bbl intake (stock Ford iron 4bbl intake) about 25 years ago. About 18 years ago we replaced a troubled Holley 4bbl with an Edelbrock Performer #1403. It's a 500 cfm unit with a kickdown lever and electric choke. What I really don't like about it is the kickdown lever mounts with a screw to the main lever. The lower mounting screw occupies the hole where the return spring belongs. I had to fabricate an aluminum bracket to mount the throttle cable and the return spring is poorly mounted. I also don't like the flimsy strip of metal Edelbrock supplies to mount the return spring for the kickdown linkage. If anyone else is using an Edelbrock I would like to get some tips on mounting the return spring. If not, I'm open to changing back to a small cfm Holley 4bbl as well.
Thanks,
Kyle

you might want to post some pictures of the set up.... use photobucket.. post the 4th link down when they are saved..
do you still have the installation manual that came with it..
current versions are available on the edelbrock site map. on the 1000 page..
i am taking that this is what you are talking about.. and there is nothing stopping you from creating a different spring mount...

show us the issues you have...

Hi Wayne,
I'll take some pictures and post the setup. You've got the right picture of the kickdown linkage I'm referring to. I have a pdf of the manual and have been taking a look at it since it's been a while. I've got access to fabrication equipment, but before I go that route, I thought I would see what other approaches exist - maybe a shoulder screw and link for the spring to attach to etc.
Thanks again for all your help on my posts. I'll get some pictures posted as soon as I can. I hope you had a good 4th.
Kyle

Wayne,
I took some pictures of the setup. Do I use the IMG code to post pictures from Photobucket?

Right click on any photo that is on the internet and at the bottom on the pop up menu is "Properties". Left click it and the URL(address) is there to be copied and used to post anywhere. After you upload a photo to Flickr, Photobucket, etc, a right click on it will give you Properties and then the URL to copy.

Hello,
Here is a picture of the current setup. It's been over 15 years since I put the plate on to mount the cable and looking back on it, I would like to come up with a more elegant solution. The return spring is just hooked on the Monte Carlo bar for now while I work on tuning it up. Having the spring like that is definitely not an arrangement I would drive with. The thin adapter plate also means that between the spacer plate sitting on the manifold, the adapter plate and the carb, I've got three gaskets that can cause a vacuum leak. I've got one now and plan to pull the carb and while I'm at it, I would like to resolve the throttle cable and kickdown linakge mess.

Wayne,
Do you think I should go with something like a cable and bracket set from Lokar or is there something that might have a more stock appearance? The Lokar bracket with return spring setup looks pretty clean. I'm trying to recall what I had with the Holleys that were on there a long time ago. Either way, I think getting rid of the plate that has the current throttle cable bracket on it would be good since it doesn't look so good and adds another gasket that can leak.
