Hello,I'm starting to work on a 1970 convertible my family has owned since about 1975. Overall the car is in pretty good shape, but the bumpers have a lot of surface rust and the tail light bezels have cracked chrome. the front bumper has a pointed dent right at the center in one spot. Should I re-chrome everything since the parts are original or purchase new ones? The tail light bezels will be a little tricker since they have painted areas and scuffing the chrome in those recesses for paint to stick would be a little tougher. Thanks,Kyle
download several suppliers catalogs...chart out the individual pricing.. if your car is still together.. drive it over to your local chrome shop.. ask them for an estimate if they can rechrome the pieces to which ever quality you want.. there are variations in chrome finish.. there are cheep down and dirty chrome plating jobs..then there are the ADDITIONAL hours spent prepping the components through the various stages to get to a SHOW CHROME finish.. pitted parts take a SIGNIFICANT amount of work.. and sometimes CANNOT be properly returned to a decent finish... i worked in a caddy restoration shop.. back in the late 80s.. it was a wheel barrow of money to rechrome the various components.. and there were FEW repo parts available.... we went as far as using the bosses wife's jewerly manufacturing company to make new lettering with Lost wax casting.. there are silver letters running around on a few caddys.. and i know that there is at least ONE out there.. with SOLID GOLD letters.. i used to sell delco voltage regulators to caddy dealers who ended up working on old customers cars... they did not have the parts catalogs i did.. when i left .. i took them also.. had to get them out of the bosses office.. he wanted to keep them.. i guess i should scan them. wait. this is a ford forum.. sorry..oh.... and you will want to provide the chrome shop with pictures of each part .. from multiple sides of the part.. all laying next to a RULER with BIG NUMBERS.. so they can judge the size..please spend the time to add blank page _____ of ______ pages... so they know how many pages and how many parts they have of yours.. for this order.. fill this out as you deliver your part to them counting them out.. you will also want to take a PHOTOGRAPH of all the parts you are taking to them in ONE image..
Hi Wayne,Thanks for the quick reply and detailed feedback. I've been looking at several catalogs and the price for bumpers etc. seem pretty reasonable, but I want to make sure the quality is good. As you mention, it seems chrome plating can vary an quality much like a paint job. The work is all in the prep. I'm going to check with my brother in law who has used some shops for bumpers on his Toronado. Your recommendation of making detailed lists and taking pictures is great as well. Thanks again for the help.Kyle
