'65 289 V engine problem

My '65 289 engine developed an internal metallic loud clanking sound which I suspect is a lifter problem or something related to that. Anyway, this requires opening up the motor and replacing lifters, possibly cam shaft, etc. I have moderate mechanical skills but I have never done internal engine repairs.
Is there a Mustang Monthly article on this or maybe some other links where I might be able to get some guided help? I have the car's manual, but like all manuals, it is too general. I have also looked up information on the internet, but all I get are Youtube short videos on engine performance. Thanks for the help Jesus

Hi! I'm sure there is an article here but from my experience you need the repair manual, You can get the book (or the CD) for around $20 at any of the mustang suppliers. I got mine from Mustangs Plus. GREAT book with lots of information. I wouldn't be with out one! Mel

would pull the valve covers off and see if you have a loose rocker, you may have turn the motor over by hand and check each 1/4 turn for two turns of the crank, check every rocker to see if it loose, if you do find one loose, check the stud to make sure, it have not pulled out of the head. or broken the rocker, or bent the pushrod.

Does the metallic clanking sound hollow or more "solid". Check out the story I did on diagnosing engine noises HERE. Get yourself a stethescope or at least use a long screwdriver with the handle resting against your ear to "listen" to various parts of the engine to try and determine where it is coming from.
