65 mustang..how to adjust shifter cable to detent

I have replaced the bushings and shifter and cable in my 65 mustang automatic, but the button on the shifter handle does not compress the cable up far enough to clear the park detent. I think there is a way to adjust the cable to match the detent height better, but when I turn the small nut at the bottom of the shifter it only seems to bind the cable, not adjust it up or down. Am I doing this right? What should I expect to happen?
