Hello,
I thought I remembered that there was a torque setting for the adjusting nut when attaching the front drums back my 66 mustang. I looked through my guides and it did not mention how tight to tighten it.
When I pulled it off, it was only about hand tightened after I took off the cotter pin and the lock nut under the dust cap.
I wasn't going to think much on this, but then realized that this bolt was the only thing holding my wheel to the car.
Is hand tightened okay?

with drum and wheel rotating, torque the nut to 15-20 ft lbs to seat the bearings, install the lock so that the castellations are aligned with the hole in the end of the shaft, then back off the nut lock one castellation and install NEW cotterpin...

thanks for the setting. I thought that there was instructions like this when dealing with seating the bearings.
I am guessing that when you say to back off the nut lock one castellation, you mean one turn maybe? Sorry, not familiar with the term. After using the torque wrench and settings and then backing off, the nut was just slightly on there tighter than hand tightening...does that sound about right?

the part that slips over the nut has slots in it for the cotter pin, turn it back one pin slot. or one castellation.

This adjustment is not AS important on drum brakes as it is a front disc brakes with non floating calipers. The more sloppy the adjustment the less brake pedal you will have. The excess tolerance will let the rotor tilt and translate this into more distance for the cups to travel to make contact and brake. Personal experience.

the adjustment is important on both,, too much play, the bearing will not support the load properly, too tight the bearing, will not have room to expand when it gets warm, and more likely force the grease away from the rollers and races,,
