Guys,I have a '66 Mustang Fastback GT that is needing a major engine overhaul. My Dad restored it back in '93 and discovered the motor in it was a later model 302 instead of the original 289. With that in mind, I had thought it may be a better option to go back with a crate motor instead of pouring more money back into an unoriginal motor. I'm not looking for monster horsepower, just a pretty solid 302. It is a factory 4-speed car. Any suggestions? Budget around 6k. Thanks!

One thing to note, being a four-speed car, is that pretty much all modern 302-based crate engines are built from late-model blocks and will NOT have the driver's side block provision for the Z-bar bushing mount. You can buy a bolt-on metal bracket that simulates the block casting threaded hole for the bushing/stud, but it will not be/look original if that is what you are going for (crate engine with correct vintage exterior). That said, we've used the Ford Racing X-302 crate engine in a few builds and it is a nice strong engine with a good warranty. 340 hp, roller cam, roller rockers, forged pistons, new rods, aluminum heads, etc. all for about $3,700. The aluminum heads make it hard to look vintage, but you can abbrate the heads with a pneumatic needle scaler to give them a cast iron look. Plus if you have full accessories on the engine (P/S, A/C, etc.) the heads just about dissapear behind all the brackets and such.Just a suggestion.HTH...Mark.
