I am new to this forum. Thanks in advance for any insight and help!1965 Mustang 289 with 4 speed manual:I am trying to reattach the speedometer cable but inside the tranny where the gear should be, it is push up and i cant seem to pull it out. I tried a hook shaped pick. This car was a 3 speed and was changed to a 4 speed in the past several years. I have the right cable for the 4 speed. No idea how this happened as I just purchased the car and speedo cable was broken off at tranny.
Let me get this straight. The transmission end of the speedo cable casing is stuck even after the bolt and retainer were removed.Sounds like somebody glued that in.Do you have a set of taps so you might thread the opening and use a bolt and slidehammer to extract it
The speedo gear is lodged up in the hole that it usually clips in. I can feel it up in there but cant remove it.I am tempted to just put the fastener clip and new gear in and then attach the cable. Just don't know if that other gear will move back and shear the new gear. Then that begs the question of which gear do I use? I have seem different formulas and not sure.thanks for any help!
oh... my mistake.. just the gear...get a long drywall screw..go in only a turn or two to the square drive end of the gear...this should give you a handle to extract it...as for speedo gear counts.. there are so many ways to go.. knowing whats in there first.. might help...
Not only is the cable different, the 3 speed gear on the end is incorrect for the 4 speed. That's probably why it is jammed.

Thanks for the input. I am going to have to pull the tail plate (for lack of better terminology) off to fix it. I have the right cable and gear, that inside gear must have jammed when the cable came of, previous owner. Thanks again. Like this forum very much!
